THRILLING WOMEN: THE LOST AIR PIRATES SESSIONS One
of the great musical discoveries of this or any other year, Thrilling Women:
The Lost Air Pirates Sessions is an
incredible art rock concept
album by Jeffrey Morgan (the authorized biographer of both Alice Cooper and The Stooges) and Dean Motter (the creator of the
influential Mister X comic book) that
was begun in the mid ’70s; abandoned in the mid ’80s; and thought to be lost
forever—until now. In 1975, at the personal invitation of
legendary rock critic Lester Bangs, Jeffrey Morgan became the de facto Canadian Editor of CREEM: America’s Only
Rock ’n’ Roll Magazine. It was during this time that he first met conceptual
illustrator and award-winning graphic designer Dean Motter,
with whom he would collaborate on a number of projects. Between 1977 and 1980,
they recorded what they described as “an ambient, electronic, avant-garde,
progressive art rock concept album” called Thrilling Women under the collective band name of the Air
Pirates. In addition to featuring Morgan and Motter
on synthesizers and vocals, Thrilling Women also featured over a dozen additional guest
musicians, including vocalist Paul Robinson of The Diodes; guitarist Toby Swann
of The Battered Wives; and saxophonist Andy Haas of Martha And The Muffins. Shortly thereafter, all of the album’s
master tapes were inadvertantly destroyed in a construction accident—or so it
seemed. Over a quarter of a century later, a heretofore unknown cache of
session tapes was discovered and subsequently digitally restored to create the
album that Bongo Beat Records is now proud to present. With the release of Thrilling Women, the history books will have to be
rewitten to include this vital document of one of the most exciting musical
eras ever known to man; a time when records by the likes of Roxy Music, Lou
Reed, David Bowie, Kraftwerk and Eno were rapidly redefining the boundaries of
modern music. In 2002, a song from the album, “A Darkened Stretch,” was released by Bongo Beat Records on the compilation album Driving In The Rain: 3AM (Songs To Get Lost With). We are proud to now present the entire album that track came from, and we are equally confident that once you hear Thrilling Women, you’ll agree with us that some things are worth waiting for—especially this album that’s been 35 years in the making. |
